Prince of Asturias Award for Concord 2014 to the Congolese journalist Caddy Adzuba

“A symbol of peaceful struggle against violence that affects women, the poverty and discrimination, through risky and generous work”: with these words the President of the Principality, Javier Fernandez, explained the awarding of the award to the outstanding journalist. The work of Caddy Adzuba on Radio Okapi, broadcaster of the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in defense of women's rights and against acts of violence of all kinds, takes place in a region marked by the trauma of war, especially since the conflict broke out in 1996 in the zone.

Caddy Adzuba is the founder of the network A Speaker for Silence - a project of the Euro-Arab Foundation - and a member of the Eastern Congo Women's Media Association., important civil society organization in his country that has denounced before the International Criminal Court the sexual violence against Congolese women.

This special recognition joins others granted in the past to Caddy Adzuba such as the Julio Anguita Parrado International Journalism Award in 2009, that of the Association of Women Journalists, the International Press Freedom Award from the University of Malaga 2010 and the Woman of the Year Award from the Aosta Valley Regional Council, Italy.

By woman and by African, The Prize also signifies a strong endorsement of the value of journalism as a profession in the fight for a world of greater social justice.
